Understanding the Opioid Epidemic is a 2018 PBS documentary that traces the causes behind the unprecedented growth in the use of prescription opioids and the devastating impact these drugs are having in every part of America. The program captures the story through personal stories and interviews with experts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 91 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose. This shocking statistic transcends geographic and socioeconomic borders. The impact on young people, families, and communities is devastating.
Prescription opioids can be used to treat moderate-to-severe pain and are often prescribed following surgery or injury, or for health conditions such as cancer. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the acceptance and use of prescription opioids for the treatment of chronic, non-cancer pain, despite serious risks and the lack of evidence about their long-term effectiveness. Anyone who takes prescription opioids can become addicted to them.
